The English debate (Thursday, September 9) did not produce a direct "knock out" among the federal leaders, but Yves-François Blanchet took advantage of the first question of the debate on Bill 21 to knock out all the other participants by using the angle of English bias against Quebec.
Another winner of the English debate was Quebec Premier François Legault, who took a stand against the debate organizers and the questioning of provincial legislation and became by this the hero defender of Quebec.
Legault's nationalism in 2021 compares closely to the one of René Lévesque in the 1970s.
It's like the good old days of the René Lévesque era as François Legault vigorously defends Quebec and its political independence from Ottawa and English-speaking Canada.
Personally, I always thought that Legault would go further than René Lévesque in the Quebec nationalist push because he is as nationalist as Lévesque but without the weaknesses.
Indeed, having known René Lévesque well in 1976, he had certain political flaws, including the fact that he was often afraid to decide so as not to contradict his deputies. François Legault considers himself as a leader while Lévesque was almost shy in front of the power...
