THE RICH MAN WHO HELPED THE POOR-

THE RICH MAN WHO HELPED THE POOR-
By Bernard Bujold -
History is a wheel that turns and we often return to the starting point. We can make a connection between the recent fire in Old Montreal and the character Scrooge by Charles Dickens in 1843; or that of Séraphin by Claude-Henri Grignon in Un Homme et son Péché (Les Belles Histoires des pays d'en haut) in 1933.
In 2023, he is a real estate owner who is the modern version of a rich man who takes advantage of poor people to get even richer.
The people who chose to stay in the burned down building in Old Montreal did so because they could not afford more and because it was cheap. For example, the young academic from California who had come to Montreal for a conference on neuroscience that was taking place at the chic Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. She wanted to extend her stay in Montreal for a day, presumably at a lower cost than her room at the Queen Elizabeth, by using Airbnb...
History repeats itself, and even in a modern and technological age like 2023, some rich people still like to help poor people and, if possible, take the opportunity to get richer...
