THE JOY OF CANADIENS HOCKEY

THE JOY OF CANADIENS HOCKEY…
By Bernard Bujold -
I love sports, but I’m not a fan of the Canadiens club or hockey, even though I used to be when I was younger…
But the success of the Canadiens hockey club goes beyond mere athletic victory. It is a source of life for thousands of underprivileged people. It was a friend, in another life, Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, who explained to me that hockey for the homeless, such as those at Accueil Bonneau, is a source of joy pure in the face of their life’s challenges. If the Canadiens’ hockey victories make the poor and homeless happy, then I am happy…
It’s not a “direct source of happiness” for me, since I’m not a Canadiens fan, but I find poverty and destitution sad… No form of life (human or animal) should suffer because of a lack of financial resources or food!

MY MOTHER'S ROSES...

MY MOTHER’S ROSES -
By Bernard Bujold -
My mother, Anita, grew roses in her garden in the Gaspé Peninsula, and she was very proud of them. My mother was an artist at heart who loved photography. In a way, she had even invented her own kind of “Photoshop.” She would cut out figures from the Eaton’s catalog and create collages to see how the clothes would look when styled according to her vision. She also colored her photos (as the portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh did), and she liked to add hair to my father…
On this Sunday, May 10, 2026, Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!

THE UNFINISHED DREAM

THE UNFINISHED DREAM…
Can an unfinished dream become our greatest joy in life? An elderly woman dreamed of visiting a historic park in the mountains. To fully enjoy her trip, she decided to have knee surgery. She fell asleep on the operating table, filled with happiness as she dreamed of her journey… Fate decreed that medical complications would cut her life short. She died happy with her dream, but if she hadn’t had a dream… Would she have died unhappy?
They say that happiness is to have dreams!
That is the question posed by the author of a WSJ article about his mother.

CROSSING THE BRIDGE...

CROSSING THE BRIDGE…
By Bernard Bujold -

My former mentor, Pierre Péladeau—the elder—often gave this response when presented with a problem that didn’t need to be solved right away.

“We’ll cross the bridge when we get to it…”

This piece of life advice applies to a variety of situations, whether in business, politics, or sports…

You should never worry excessively about a future situation, but face it head-on when the time comes.

We could offer this advice to Canadiens coach Martin Saint-Louis and his team, because even though Buffalo looks better on paper than the Canadiens, they’ll have to cross the bridge to victory—and they have to wait until they’re in front of the bridge to cross it! One of the two teams will come out on top!

To be continued…

Enjoy the hockey game and, above all, have a great weekend

THE LUCK TO WIN

THE LUCK TO WIN...
By Bernard Bujold -
You could say the Montreal Canadiens hockey club is lucky... Their victory over Tampa wasn't supposed to happen, but luck was on their side. The team actually set a National Hockey League record during that last game in Tampa: one and a half periods of play (27 minutes) without a single shot on the opponent’s goal by the Canadiens players... That hadn’t happened since the 1955-56 season! Will the Canadiens’ luck hold up against Buffalo? It will have to, because on paper, the Sabres are far superior to the Canadiens.
Fans will have to watch the first games of the series on a giant screen at the Bell Centre or at home, as the series begins in Buffalo. The first two games will take place in Buffalo on Wednesday, May 6 (7 p.m.) and Friday, May 8 (7 p.m.), while the third and fourth games will be played in Montreal on Sunday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 12.

THE WOMAN AT THE GYM

THE WOMAN AT THE GYM...
By Bernard Bujold -
I usually work out alone at the gym, but this morning there was a young woman... Well, I thought she was a young woman, but I was completely stunned when the building's doorman told me that this lady was 71 years old... She looked like she was 40! Obviously, rich and famous people (this woman at the gym is rich and famous) have the means to stay young. My conclusion is that while money can never buy happiness, it can sometimes buy youth...
Long live the rich and famous!

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

A LOVE OF MUSIC -
By Bernard Bujold -
I love politics, sports, photography, and dogs... But I have another passion: music! Among my favorite artists (besides Hildegard von Bingen), the Rolling Stones have always been at the top of the list.
I love Mick Jagger (82), an intellectual as well as an artist. Mick and I also share a daily passion: the gym… Mick Jagger is generally considered a very intelligent and shrewd man, often described as a “calculating survivor” who manages the Rolling Stones’ business affairs, and he studied at the prestigious London School of Economics before pursuing a music career. He often displays extensive general knowledge, great erudition, and a certain cynicism. He speaks French fluently and is the father of eight children by three different mothers. Mick claims that the rock star profession is “intellectually unstimulating”… He has often stated that he could have become a journalist or a politician, and he had considered teaching as a possible career.
It was a delight to learn that the Stones will release a new album on July 10, “Foreign Tongues.” Two of the tracks are already available on music streaming platforms: “Rough and Twisted” and “In The Stars.” The album will feature 14 tracks in total and marks the Stones’ 25th studio album. I love the first two tracks that are available. To be continued...

A FRIEND TO CHAT WITH...

A FRIEND TO CHAT WITH...
By Bernard Bujold -
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that, on his recommendation, King Charles III has approved the appointment of the Honourable Louise Arbour as Canada’s next Governor General. The former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada will become Canada’s 31st Governor General on June 8, while Canadian unity could become a major issue in Alberta and particularly in Quebec during the October 5 election in Quebec.
One may be for or against the concept of the monarchy in Canada, but no one disputes the outstanding professional and personal qualities of Louise Arbour (79).
When asked about this appointment, Mark Carney said that with Ms. Arbour, he would have a friend with whom to discuss and exchange views on issues of international significance. In other words, he will have a friend who is well-versed in global political structures to chat with...

THE SPRING SEASON OF 2026 AND PABLO

SPRING 2026 AND PABLO...
By Bernard Bujold -
I miss seeing Pablo Rodriguez on the political scene...
It seems to me that the current election campaign in Quebec and the spring season of 2026 would be more enjoyable if he were still around. We’ll have to wait and see how the other party's leaders in the race perform on October 5, but I remain convinced that Pablo has what it takes to be a premier!
Of course, one must learn to move on in the face of life’s setbacks, and I should put this Pablo thought out of my mind, but I continue to think of Pablo, and of what he might have been if the putsch (coup) had not happened inside his party, every time I hear about Quebec politics...
Have a great spring 2026!

THE MONTREAL CANADIENS BETTER THAN THE TAMPA MACHINE

THE CANADIENS' MACHINE...
By Bernard Bujold-
The Canadiens eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2–1 in the game on Sunday, May 3, 2026. It’s safe to say the Canadiens outplayed Tampa’s powerful machine... The Canadiens won Game 7 and advanced to the NHL quarterfinals (the Eastern Conference semifinals), where the Montreal team will face the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres finished first in the Atlantic Division this season and advanced to the second round by easily eliminating the Boston Bruins in six games (4–2). Since Buffalo finished ahead of Montreal in the regular-season standings, the series will begin at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. It was a close battle between the two teams last season, with Montreal winning two of their four matchups against the Sabres.
The first two games of the series between the Canadiens and the Sabres will take place on Wednesday and Friday in Buffalo. The third and fourth games will be played in Montreal on Sunday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 12.

THE WINNER OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY 2026

THE WINNER AT THE KENTUCKY DERBY 2026-
By Bernard Bujold-
The horse Golden Tempo won the 152nd Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2026. The horse, trained by Cherie DeVaux, crossed the finish line first in what was described as a 23-1 odds longshot victory. Golden Tempo made history among 19 horses as he pulled off an improbable stretch run from the outside to edge out favorite Renegade (5-1) at the finish line and make Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to have a horse win the Run for the Roses of the Kentucky Derby. Golden Tempo came from well back in the pack after they came around the final turn, but a comfortable race pace meant most of the field came into the stretch with a chance to win with a great kick. It was jockey Jose Ortiz who was able to get the most out of his horse on that closing stretch to outrun Renegade and the rest of the field to the wire.
My favorite horse RENEGADE, almost wins, but Golden Tempo crossed the line first, and as they say in sports: "The one who finishes second loses the race..."

SPRING 2026 AND THE HORSES...

THE SPRING SEASON 2026 AND THE HORSES...
By Bernard Bujold-
With each spring season also comes the three horse races for the American Triple Crown. The first race is tonight, Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 6:57 pm (live on NBC) with the Kentucky Derby. The favorite horse for Kentucky is RENEGADE, a really good horse. Renegade is a 3-year-old bay colt who is around 5-1 odds favorite to win the 2026 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. But Renegade has one bad marker as he drew Post Position No. 1 (the rail) at the starting gate. This is historically a "cursed" spot; no horse has won the Kentucky Derby from the rail since 1986. Renegade will wear the number 1 (saddlecloth) for the Kentucky Derby race.
To win the Triple Crown, the same horse has to win three races: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont. Only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown since the beginning of the American Triple Crown tradition, which began to take shape in 1919, and the last modern Triple Crown winner was in 2018.

MY FRIEND MARK

MY FRIEND MARK...
By Bernard Bujold -
Yesterday, Wednesday, April 28, 2026, marked one year since Mark Carney was elected Prime Minister of Canada. He is said to be one of the most respected politicians in the world. I voted for my friend Mark on April 28, 2025. The next federal election will now take place on October 15, 2029.
But next October 5, I’ll be having a lot of fun with the Quebec provincial election...
To be continued! Have a great spring 2026.

A FRIENDLY OLD MAN VISITS HIS FRIEND...

A FRIENDLY OLD MAN VISITS HIS FRIEND...
By Bernard Bujold -
It’s easy to see that Donald Trump and King Charles get along wonderfully. Watching them during the king’s official visit to Washington, it seemed as though Donald and Charles were childhood friends. I listened to King Charles’s speech before the U.S. Congress (Tuesday, April 28, 2026), and I must admit that he is an excellent speaker. He is calm, speaks pleasantly and with perfect grammar (in English), and flashes a wry smile when he makes humorous remarks.
I admired Queen Elizabeth for the same calmness and humor that Charles displays. Like mother, like son! All in all, I wouldn’t hesitate to spend a weekend with Charles, especially since we both love horses. But I’m a realist—my chances of seeing that wish come true are two: “slim and none...”
