PHOTOSHOP REALITY IN 2024

PHOTOSHOP REALITY IN 2024 -
By Bernard Bujold -
Poor Princess Kate! She thought she was having fun with Photoshop and created the scandal of 2024... In the end, it's a trifle. But in the world of traditional media, it's the scandal of the century...
This controversy is a return to the old debate of the 1990s, when Photoshop (first edition 1.0 - released on February 19, 1990) was first introduced and several major magazines refused to retouch their models' photos...
I've always loved Photoshop's creative possibilities. My goal as a photographer is to create an image. But for other photographers, the goal is to record time in the camera... It's a question of vision.
I had two main mentors in my passion for photography: Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) and my mother Anita Cyr (1922-2005), and both were forerunners of Photoshop.
Karsh employed an assistant in his Ottawa studio, whose exclusive job was to make up negatives with pencils and other instruments, according to Karsh's instructions, and thus eliminate defects. The most important thing for Yousuf was to offer his customers a photo that made them look their best.
My mother Anita was an amateur photographer, but she had an instinctive grasp of image techniques. And just like Karsh, Anita would use a pencil to make up her photos and remove or add elements, such as the hair in my father's photos...
Of course, this was before the magic of Photoshop, but the concept has never changed. Photography is the art of creating images that convey a message, our message as photographers. Without our message, photography becomes useless and boring.
