THE FUTURE OF MONTREAL

THE FUTURE OF MONTREAL -
By Bernard Bujold -
Valérie Plante's victory as mayor of Montreal is not surprising.
I had been predicting it for about a month, as her opponent Denis Coderre was unable to create the momentum needed to replace the mayor.
I would say that Plante did not win the election, but that Coderre lost it.
He made several key mistakes in his defeat, the most important of which was not staying in opposition after his defeat in 2017. Had he remained in opposition, he could have continually attacked the mayor's work and set the stage for 2021. This absence in the debate prevented him from being able to build his momentum for the November 2021 election.
Valérie Plante can rejoice with the euphoria of victory, as she is like a sports team that has won its rematch against the former champion.
What is the future for Montreal?
In my opinion, the city lost its soul long ago and has become a kind of transit airport. There are no longer citizens of Montreal, but people who are just passing through. You only have to walk through the streets of Montreal to see that the metropolis has only the status of a metropolis in name and memory of the past. It must be said that the coronavirus did not help.
Am I disappointed and worried by the victory of Valérie Plante, I who am of the right wing? The answer is no, because life goes on and as an airport is only a transit, Montreal is only a city among others on the planet; a place, without more.
