THE NEXT ELECTIONS IN QUEBEC-
By Bernard Bujold -
The next general election in Quebec will take place on October 5, 2026. Mathieu Bock-Côté kicked up quite a cloud of dust during his appearance on Tout le monde en parle last Sunday, November 16, 2025. I like Bock-Côté, but where he is wrong, in my opinion, is on the style of Quebec politics. Quebec voters have never voted on a political platform, but always on the leaders. We like or dislike a leader and vote by elimination. The least hated candidate wins the vote... In 1976, Quebec voted for René Lévesque because people adored him and admired his style!
If we want to make a projection for the 2026 vote, we can conclude that François Legault will be rejected. Pierre St-Pierre Plamondon is popular, but he is plateauing in the polls because people are afraid of his referendum project. That leaves Pablo Rodriguez, who is relatively low-key but whom people ultimately find likable. In politics, when two candidates are locked in a battle to the finish like Legault and Plamondon, the best thing for a third candidate to do is to watch and wait for the two opponents to fall...
In theory, Rodriguez could then find himself with the prime minister's seat available due to the downfall of Plamondon and Legault. But for now, an unexpected challenge has arisen for the Liberal leader with the case of House Leader Marwah Rizqy. Pablo Rodriguez will have to prove that he is the boss and leader of the party!
