THE TENNIS CHAMPIONS - US OPEN 2019

THE CHAMPIONS US OPEN 2019 -
By Bernard Bujold -
It can be concluded that the 2019 US Open tennis tournament was the fight between generations, veterans against beginners. We could also say that we have witnessed the beginning of the change of era in modern tennis!
First came Saturday evening (September 7) with the surprising victory of Canadian Bianca Andreescu (19 years old) against legend Serena Williams (37 years old). It should be noted that the champion Williams started her professional tennis career in 1995 while Bianca was only born on June 6, 2000...
On Sunday evening (September 8), tennis fans were able to experience history once again as champion Rafael Nadal (33 years old) struggled to win the tournament final against young athlete Danill Medvedev (23 years old). The legend Nadal became a professional player at the age of 15 in 2002.
In all sports, young athletes are replacing the reigning champions and this is a normal reality. However fans often have mixed feelings between their aging stars and young recruits, as was the case this weekend at the US Open in New York City when the crowd was fully behind Williams and Nadal and booed their opponents.
When asked about the future of tennis, Rafael Nadal himself warned fans that the days of Federer, Djokovic, Nadal were coming to an end and that we must look to new champions.
For his part, Eugène Lapierre of Tennis Canada (Montreal) is thrilled with the victory of Canadian Andreescu but he admits that we must also wait to see if the young athlete will be able to dominate the pressure that comes with the role of world champion in tennis. We can't avoid making the comparison with Quebec's Eugénie Bouchard, who was the star of the hour in 2014 but who was never able to stay at the top of her sport after that.
For my part, even as a Nadal fan since his debut, a 5-hour tennis match is a little too stressful.... Rafa and the Russian played for 4 hours and 51 minutes for a total of 5 sets at 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 and finally 6-4. My passion for tennis began with the André Agassi, Pete Sampras, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Monica Seles and others from the time before Rafa and Serena.
However, for the future, I may prefer less stress and I'm thinking of starting fishing by the lake...
