JEAN-PAUL RIOPELLE MOVES TO QUEBEC CITY...
By Bernard Bujold-
The whole of cultural Montreal is saddened by the announcement that the Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) Museum project will move to Quebec City.
The initial project was to be the work of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, but the saga surrounding the dismissal of
of director Nathalie Bondil in July of 2020 had aborted the project.
Montrealers have not forgotten Nathalie Bondil's contribution, however, and all the major media have attributed the choice of Quebec City as a consequence of the MBAM board's decision to cancel their project because it bore Bondil's signature and the MBAM board refused to pay her tribute.
One can conclude that the MBAM is losing a lot and according to some great art collectors, the actions of the board, including ex-president Michel La Chenelière towards Nathalie will have set the Museum back 50 years!
Many collectors miss the good old days of the Museum under the presidency of Bernard Lamarre, which lasted 25 years between 1983 and 2008.
Personally, I consider this situation sad to cry for Montreal.
The debate surrounding the move of the Musée Riopelle project to Quebec City is reminiscent of the move of a major work by the artist in 2003, LA JOUTE, which was installed in front of the Palais des Congrès and the Caisse de dépôt du Québec, but which was previously at the Olympic Stadium. The move was heavily criticized at the time by the people of the Hochelaga neighborhood who did not appreciate losing their sculpture to downtown Montreal...
