THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN

THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN -
By Bernard Bujold -
How a bunch of Taliban street fighters in sneakers and sandals could have defeated an army of 300,000 Afghan soldiers furnished in modern guns by the United States?
The decision by Joe Biden to withdraw too fast from Afghanistan is blamed by many world leaders. Many observers are comparing this situation to the one in Vietnam.

NATIONAL ACADIAN DAY - AUGUST 15, 2021

NATIONAL ACADIAN DAY - AUGUST 15, 2021
By Bernard Bujold -
If there is a symbol representing the Acadians, it is the trees! In fact, the first sentence of the legendary poem Évangéline begins with trees: "Salut vieille forêt...". Throughout the poem, trees are central to the story, either for their beauty or as a means of fighting the English military occupation.
I grew up surrounded by trees and for my father, a Gaspesian lumberjack, it was his life. He loved to walk on his woodlot and he had planted several trees around his house in the village of Saint-Siméon de Bonaventure, including two magnificent larches, the official tree of the Acadians, which were installed on each side of his driveway. He called his two trees "violins", the Acadian nickname for the larch.
My father (Léonard Bujold 1915-1976) was an Acadian descendant whose ancestors had taken refuge in the Baie-des-Chaleurs before the deportation of 1755. It should be remembered that the English army formally forbade the Acadians, under penalty of death, to leave the Grand Pré region, as it was feared that they would join the French soldiers in Quebec to fight against England. The English army therefore organized, in secret, a maritime deportation of the Acadians, first to Fort Beauséjour in August and to Grand Pré on September 5. They wanted to deport them as far away from the territory as possible in order to prevent them from reaching Quebec, but also to prevent them from returning to their Acadian land. However, a good number of Acadians managed to escape from the English military occupation, through the forest and by sea, at the risk of their lives, to take refuge at the French fort of Restigouche and then to settle everywhere east of the Baie-des-Chaleurs. My ancestors were among those who managed to escape. A dozen Acadian families founded the parish of Bonaventure in 1760, then Carleton in 1766.
It was more than 100 years after the deportation, in 1881, during the first Acadian national convention that took place in Memramcook, that the elites chose the date of August 15 to mark the official holiday of their people.
Personally, every time I look at trees, I think of my father and the Acadian culture.
Happy National Holiday 2021 to all Acadians!

CANADIAN ELECTIONS 2021

ELECTIONS CANADA 2021 -
By Bernard Bujold-
It will be a short campaign of 36 days for a Canadian election next Monday, September 20.
The question we must start asking ourselves is: "Who will you vote for?
According to the polls, the outcome is on the line and it will be difficult for Justin Trudeau to reach 170 out of 338 for the majority. He currently stands at 155; Conservatives 119; NDP 24; Bloc 32; Independents 5; and Greens 2.
Justin needs to win 15 new Liberal MPs, which is a long way off.

THE GRANDE BIBLIOTHÈQUE OF QUEBEC IN 2021

THE GRANDE BIBLIOTHÈQUE OF QUEBEC -
By Bernard Bujold -
The Grande Bibliothèque was the idea of Lise Bissonnette in 1996, which idea will be realized only 10 years later in 2005 by the Premier at the time Lucien Bouchard.
I used to go to the Grande Bibliothèque a lot but I gave up since the beginning of the March 2020 lockdown.
Will the appointment of the new director Marie Grégoire give the institution a new impetus?
Since the Coronavirus, it is the end of a way of life and a style of civilization. It is the end of museums, theaters, shopping centers and their stores, large sports and cultural gatherings, restaurants and bars, and libraries.
In the case of the Great Library, not only does the institution have to face the consequences of the virus, but it has to do so with a polarization regarding its new director.

MAYOR OF MONTREAL IN 2021

MAYOR OF MONTREAL IN 2021-
A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN-
By Bernard Bujold -
Violence has taken over Montreal and one could say that the time has come for a new sheriff in town...
The faithful Ulysses is convinced that it would take a superhero, like a cowboy who shoots faster than his shadow!
On a more serious note, one wonders if the mayoral candidates will make the recent surge in violence as part of their election campaign for which citizens will vote on Sunday, November 7.
Attention mayoral hopefuls!

THE AFTERMATH OF THE CORONAVIRUS...

THE AFTERMATH OF THE CORONAVIRUS...
By Bernard Bujold -
I went for a walk in Old Montreal on this Saturday, August 7, 2021 to reconnect with the city...
It was crowded as in the past, but there was something missing! It was as if the lockdown and everything surrounding the coronavirus had broken the soul of Montreal and made the crowd sad and fearful.
I must say that the orange cones are not helping the situation.
Let's hope that one day the good times will come back but the world has changed and I'm afraid that Montreal will never be the same as it was in the good old days!
Unless a miracle happens on November 7th...

DESTINY

DESTINY-
By Bernard Bujold -
What are the elements that influence our place in human destiny?
Talent; willpower; luck? Probably a bit of all three... and more!
I recently read a story about a homeless man living under an overpass in a cardboard shack, and in another newspaper, on the same day, it was written about the house of an ex-senator (Leo Kolber) with 20 rooms, 10,000 square feet or 929 square meters, and an appraisal of 15 million dollars. Legend has it that he entertained up to 200 guests at a time and that his caterer never rented a plate or utensils...
One could see it as a human injustice, but as the world is unfair to begin with, the situation is normal.
A friend of mine, to whom I asked the question, answered that we are like pebbles in the universe. There are small pebbles and big rocks. It is the randomness of the universe that determines the size of each one.
Conclusion: "It is useless to want to be a big rock if our destiny is to be a small stone. The reverse is also true!"
Happy summer 2021 and have a great first weekend in August!

THE LOVE OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES

THE LOVE OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES -
By Bernard Bujold -
There was a time when I loved to follow the progress of the Olympic Games but, like other things in society, everything changes and I have lost this love. I did watch the opening ceremony (Friday, July 23, 2021) on TV and I will watch the closing ceremony (Sunday, August 8 ) but that will be it.
I still love sports, but my passion is elsewhere, more local, especially around the Ile Notre-Dame water basin and its bike track. Every time I go for a ride, looking at the landscape and the athletes training there, it's in my mind as if I were rubbing shoulders with the sporting elite. Ulysse thinks like me and he is a fan of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit garages...
Congratulations to all the medallists of Japan and have a great summer 2021!
