Death is never an easy event for those who survive, and can be impossible to overcome for years. A friend of mine has just lost his daughter, aged just 40. A father should never see his children die...
When my father died, I was 20 years old, and this event influenced my whole life for more than 10 years after, before I managed to live normally in my mind. Looking back on my life, it would have been better for me to forget about his death in June 1976 and get on with my life, but my head wouldn't let me... It was consequential for me because all the important decisions in life are made when you're in your 20s, and these decisions then influence your whole adult life.
My advice in the face of death is "to live with the living and leave the dead with the dead...". But that's the advice of the old man I am, and I wasn't able to apply it for myself when I needed to, after my father's death.
