BOOKS FROM QUEBEC

BOOKS FROM QUEBEC -
By Bernard Bujold -
Yesterday, Saturday, August 12, 2023, was Quebec Book Day. For me, the book in honor was that of my next-door neighbor and probably one of Quebec's greatest journalists and writers, Jean Paré. His latest book, Pièces d'identité, is definitely a masterpiece, and I often find myself rereading chapters of it. "... If a man is ever able to reach other planets, other stars in other galaxies, he will bring with him not only his dreams but his nightmares, his mistakes, his whole nature with its two faces, the good and the bad...." In Pièces d'identité, the former editor of L'actualité takes a passionate look at the stages of life. Taking the side of freedom, science, nature, the French language, secularism, and the future, he weighs up the disturbing return of religion, the malaise of culture, the limits of the image (and of digital technology) whose pixels more often than not hide the truth, and the hopes and miseries of school.
This essay is not a biography, but the product of a varied and profound experience of the media, and an insatiable appetite for books, great music, and life. If there's one book that honors Quebec, it's Jean Paré's. http://www.lemeac.com/catalogue/1654-pieces-d-identite.html
