Another character from my era has just left...
I discovered the Sagouine through Radio-Canada television in 1976. The character played by Viola Léger (1930-2023) did not connect with me in terms of her way of life but her speech was identical to the one of my two Acadian grandparents who lived in the Baie des Chaleurs. The life of the Acadians of Caraquet, where La Sagouine originated, is influenced by the sea and fishing, while the Acadians of the Baie des Chaleurs are influenced by agriculture and the forest.
I met Viola Léger a few times when she was living in Montreal. She was a sweet and generous woman. She was born on a June 29th and me on a 28th...
