POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN QUEBEC

POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN QUEBEC -
By Bernard Bujold -
Political violence is not a new phenomenon and while many media criticize the polarization of citizens around the world in the face of politics, violence and division have existed since the beginning of time either in Roman times with Julius Caesars; French against Marie Antoinette; the two World Wars; or Americans and their conflicts since the creation of their country.
Quebec has nothing to envy to others and we find here many cases of violence, be it the events of October 1970 or the Red Squares in 2012. But the most violent moment in terms of history is without question the destruction by fire in the Old Montreal of the Parliament of Canada on April 25, 1849 by the protesters. The citizens disputed the decision of the government in place to financially compensate the patriots. The Parliament building was attacked and burned!
The Pointe-à-Callière Museum has been showcasing the site for some years now and until September (2018) an exhibition of the excavations pieces is on display at the Montreal Town Hall.
