THE CALIFORNIA OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH -

For anyone who has read the Bible, the flames destroying California are reminiscent of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Roughly 30,000 acres were aflame, at least five people died, and more than 200,000 were without power across the wider Los Angeles area. Tens of thousands of residents were ordered to leave their homes.
Over 2,000 structures were damaged as the blazes remained largely uncontained since the beginning on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, stretching the region’s firefighting resources to their limits.
Nearly every corner of the sprawling Los Angeles area, home to some 10 million people, was smothered by a sky of smoke and ash.

THE AMERICAN STATE OF CANADA...

Donald Trump's suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state did not originate with him but goes back as far as the Patriotes of 1837-38, if not even further, with attempts by the U.S. to annex Canada dating back to colonial times, notably with the invasion of Quebec in 1774-1775.
Will Donald's idea hold water in 2024? First, Canada would not be a single state but ten or so because the territory is too vast and divided. On the other hand, this debate and the current political situation in Ottawa could breathe new life into Quebecers' nationalist feelings, not to join the United States but to become independent from Canada...
In conclusion, although the idea of annexing Canada is not new, Trump's proposal seems more provocation than a realistic project, and Donald is having fun...

On New Year's Day 2025, I listened to the songs of La Bolduc, a Gaspé artist who made a name for herself in Quebec in the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Newport, near Gaspé, her father, Lawrence Travers, was an Anglophone of Irish descent, and her mother, Adéline Cyr, was of French-Canadian and Mi'kmaq descent. My mother was also a Cyr... I'd have to search the genealogy to find out if I'm directly related to the singer...
La Bolduc's songs told the story of her time, and I was surprised to find that in 2024, we're still grappling with the same political and social problems as we were 100 years ago! The endless debates between politicians, the lack of jobs, too many immigrants, the struggle of the poor against the rich, the cost of groceries, the stress of city life, and many of his songs speak of our close and constant but turbulent relationship with our neighbor the United States and Americans...
Time passes, but history repeats itself...
La Bolduc's oeuvre includes recordings of some one hundred of her many songs.

THE LAST PLAY OF JUSTIN TRUDEAU
JUSTIN TRUDEAU IS STILL IN THE GAME...

If Ottawa politics were a football game, you could say Justin Trudeau made a “Hail Mary” pass...
A “Hail Mary” pass is a very long forward pass, usually made in desperation, with little chance of success. It's traditionally attempted at the end of a half or at the end of a game when the team is too far from the end zone to execute a more conventional play.
Justin didn't say he was leaving! He said he “intends” to leave when his party has a new leader.
What happens if, on March 25, the party doesn't have a new leader and an election is called?
Justin would legally remain the leader and run the campaign.
Few candidates will agree to run for the leadership of the Liberal party, as the chances of victory are slim to none.
Justin is playing his last play in the football of Ottawa politics…
and Donald Trump has fun in the stands.

Justin Trudeau has decided to give up the fight. There were two possible strategies. The first was to remain party leader and call an election. The other was to resign and give up politics. Justin will remain in office until the next Liberal leader is chosen in the coming months.
Personally, I would have advised him to stay on and call an election. He didn't take my advice...
A rumor began circulating in Ottawa that Justin might run for the Liberal leadership again, as his father did in 1980... To be continued

ELON MUSK AND SERIOUS BUSINESS-

Elon Musk celebrated the end of 2024 on December 31 with his family at Mar-A-Lago with Donald and Melania. He also played a practical joke on his 210 million followers on X-Twitter by changing his profile name to “Kekius Maximus” for a day. He also changed his profile photo to an image of the popular character Pepe the Frog dressed in gladiator armor, inspired by the film THE GLADIATOR starring Russel Crowe.
Musk's X-subscribers were shocked or charmed...
But as all good things must end, the costume ball lasted only until the end of the year. On January 1, Elon reverted to his real identity and placed a real photo of himself as his avatar. He said he had some serious business to attend to in Washington over the next few months in the company of his friend Donald!

Life is an adventure, and the new year 2025 should be exciting!
Of course, nothing can be taken for granted, but instinct is the tool for understanding life, and you have to know how to discover and listen to your instinct to enjoy life! Instinct is the ability to predict events based on experience. This is exactly the concept behind artificial intelligence, the technology currently in vogue, which can read texts and predict future sentences based on past reading experience... The ultimate question: “Will artificial intelligence (the machine) instinct surpass human instinct?
The answer will come quickly, for as Henry Kissinger (1923- 2023) wrote in his latest book GENESIS, since the advent of artificial intelligence, societal technologies that once had a lifespan of twenty years or so are now down to one or two, giving way to other innovations, precisely because of the power of artificial intelligence.
Who knows what tomorrow's society will be like? In the end, life's events are like trees in a forest. We must look beyond a single tree and realize the immensity of the options, obstacles, and opportunities. I like the concept I discovered from my son David-Bernard, to sum up life: AMOR FATI (love of destiny)...
On behalf of the “THREE SPIRITS” (the mascots Argos, Ulysses, and Gus) and myself, our best wishes for a happy new year 2025 and, above all, good luck...
