Donald Trump's suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state did not originate with him but goes back as far as the Patriotes of 1837-38, if not even further, with attempts by the U.S. to annex Canada dating back to colonial times, notably with the invasion of Quebec in 1774-1775.
Will Donald's idea hold water in 2024? First, Canada would not be a single state but ten or so because the territory is too vast and divided. On the other hand, this debate and the current political situation in Ottawa could breathe new life into Quebecers' nationalist feelings, not to join the United States but to become independent from Canada...
In conclusion, although the idea of annexing Canada is not new, Trump's proposal seems more provocation than a realistic project, and Donald is having fun...
