It's like a real whodunit set in Old Montreal, as the story takes such incredible and mysterious turns.
The novel begins with a tragic fire in which 7 people are killed; then immediately there are accusations of negligence against the owner; then the discovery of a criminal who is said to have started the fire with gasoline; then we learn that the municipal authorities refused to allow the owner to transform his building to make it safe, as it was classified as historic; finally, the firefighters wouldn't listen to the owner on the morning of the fire, forbidding him to approach the firefighters to inform them that people were trapped inside.
Normally, the conclusion would reveal who started the fire and why.
If this were a Louise Penny novel, we might have a riddle like the criminal who started the fire was a firefighter who wanted to make Mayor Valérie Plante look bad for her political decisions regarding municipal employees.
The easiest and most logical solution would simply be a mafioso (street gang) who wanted to warn the building's owner, but in crime novels, the culprit and motive are always unbelievable and the opposite of logical...
