THE REBIRTH OF THE DOLLARAMA-
By Bernard Bujold -
My favorite store is in full swing, but we'll have to change the name because there is nothing for $1 anymore, except matches and greeting cards... Most items are now selling for $2.50 to $5.00!
The first store was founded in Montreal in 1910 by Salim Rossy, a Lebanese immigrant, and operated under the name Rossy S. In 1992, Larry Rossy opened the first Dollarama in the "Les promenades du St-Laurent" shopping center in Matane. In the late 1990's, the Rossy S chain was discontinued and all of its stores were converted to Dollarama.
In November 2004, 80% of the chain was sold for US$850 million to Boston-based private equity firm, Bain Capital. Dollarama went public on October 9, 2009.
