THE GREY NUNS OF OLD MONTREAL - 2019
THE GREY NUNS OF OLD MONTREAL -2019
By Bernard Bujold-
A group of the Grey Nuns of Montreal has long lived in Old Montreal in the former hospital of the congregation. They lived their daily lives and religious life there with the celebration of masses and prayers.
Several times a week, I walk past the building and I have always been attracted by the mysterious nature of the place. I visited the Sisters three or four times when they were doing "Annual Open Houses" and I loved talking with them. Unfortunately, the ten sisters or so from Old Montreal all left and abandoned the residence in 2017 to join their colleagues who had gathered elsewhere in 2013 in a Rosemont residence. It should be noted that of the more than 1,000 members of the congregation at the beginning of the century, only a total of about 100 remain in the world today and it is expected that within 20 years the congregation will be eliminated.
The Grey Nuns of Montreal want to create a museum of the former Old Montreal Hospital, a project under development and seeking funding.
Last Sunday, there was a day of awareness for the religious buildings of Greater Montreal and I couldn't resist another visit to the former residence of "my friends the Grey Nuns".
The soul and mystery of the Sisters are no longer really there, but the building still offers a sense of peace and the future Museum will most certainly be a magnificent reminder of the memory of the "good" Grey Nuns of Montreal.
