The history of Canada is relatively young and while the current confederation dates back to 1867, the first origins of organized society began in Quebec.
In fact, the first Canadian parliament was located in Montreal, but it was burned down and completely destroyed by a band of rebels opposing the elected government. The history of Canada has always been closely linked to the one of the United States. At the time (1849), the political atmosphere in Canada was very similar to the one of today in United States with great economic difficulties, a deep polarization of political ideas, and a great violence in the society. One would think that history is repeating itself in 2020 and that the more time passes, the less things change...
